True travel stories...and a spot of financial self-help!
After a decade or two of getting paid to write magazine articles all over the world, adding books to my repertoire was a logical step. I had far more stories to tell than could fit into those tight editorial word counts – and books offered the freedom to let them unfurl to their natural length.
For various reasons, I elected to write under the pseudonym R.A. Dalkey. Inspiration came from a small town along the D.A.R.T line just south of Dublin, for no other reason than the fact that the name tickled me. I didn’t even know Dalkey hosted a major annual book festival! But I think it’s a sign – and I still await my invitation from the organisers...
My books are mostly a blend of travel and middle-aged pining for a more sensible world. I like to think the general thrust might be compared to that observed in Bill Bryson’s work – although I tend to visit more developing countries than he does. As you'll notice in Monte Carlo for Vagabonds, it’s not all tea rooms and local museums when I hit the road!
I've also written a little self-help book on the side. In it, I share some of the thinking that helped me save a lifetime of meagre earnings into a useful stack of money. At the same time, I explore how these hacks also tend to have a positive impact on the environment.
This one's also available in German. That edition has been featured in the Viennese media.
